Tuesday Things.
1. We have had such a crazy busy December that last night I had a dream that all my teeth were falling out. Isn’t that a sign that you feel out of control? Ha!
2. Chocolate chip marshmallow cookies?! Okay I need to make these!
3. Not going to lie, my eggnog lattes are the highlight of my morning.
4. Very tempted now to add red wine to my hot chocolate!
5. TV things!! What did we think of the Yellowstone finale?! I didn’t love this abbreviated season but couldn’t think of any other way for it to end, so I’m good.
6. 50 things to start doing earlier in life. Love this.
7. I finished The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year and it was SO good.
8. Give me all your new year’s eve food traditions please.

My family’s tradition on New Year’s Day is to eat black-eyed peas. When I married, my husband didn’t like peas. I made jambalaya and added a can of black-eyed peas. He would eat them if mixed in to all the Jambalaya goodness. 35 years later, he eats peas so sometimes they are in the Jambalaya and sometimes they are the side dish. I always make turnip greens for myself, and I require my husband to take one obligatory bite. Wishing you all a Happy New Year!
My husband and I do really good caviar with all the fixings, fresh cracked crab, and fancy champagne. And we order a pizza for the kids with sparkling cider. We hated going out on NYE in our 20s so it’s been a tradition to stay home in pjs and work on a puzzle / watch a movie / play games. It’s the best!
We’ve made a huge pan of sheet pan nachos with all the fixings the past few years in the late afternoon and then I put out a charcuterie plate and have a crockpot of BBQ jelly meatballs for grazing the rest of the night.
Since we’ve stayed in with our kids the last couple of NYE, I’ve checked out and we have an appetizer dinner, fancy stuff from the frozen section, a veggie everyone will eat, otherwise not necessarily healthy. My oldest likes dumplings and other Asian type apps, but mini pigs in a blanket go over well too ☺️
#1…I ‘ve that SAME dream over the years, and it’s my literal nightmare. On the positive side, I always wake up thrilled that all my teeth are intact! ha! :)
Happy Holiday season to you & your sweet family!!! NYE spread always includes old bay shrimp, champs & crème brûlée … the rest of the menu is your standard charcuterie. Here in Central PA, the New Year’s Day food tradition is pork, sauerkraut & mashed potatoes to soak up all the fun from the night before with legend having it that the sauerkraut guarantees health & happiness in the new year.
NYE we make a bunch of fancy chocolates like peanut butter buckeyes, white chocolate covered Oreos, coconut bon bons (they’re just butter, sweetened condensed milk, almond extract, powdered sugar and shredded coconut rolled into balls and dipped in chocolate), and fudge. Sometimes we do a few additions like pistachio bark and chocolate covered cookie dough bites, but those are the staples. We also usually do a charcuterie spread, although some years we do chili and breadsticks instead. But the chocolate is the star.
Our NYE food traditions are quiche and cupcakes. We had our engagement pictures taken (many years ago now) at our favorite bakery actually, and we ate quiche at the bakery and shared cupcakes in some of the photos. It’s been a sweet thing to revisit over the years.
In Texas (I think most of the south), we eat black eyed peas for luck and cabbage for money on New Year’s Day.
